I · Since 1932
The oldest film festival
Venice is the oldest film festival in the world. The first edition opened on the night of 6 August 1932 on the terrace of the Excelsior hotel on the Lido, with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The Palazzo del Cinema followed in 1937, and the Golden Lion in 1949.
II · The island · not the historic centre
Lido
The festival takes place on the Lido, the long island between the lagoon and the Adriatic. Its home since 1937 is the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lungomare Marconi, and the main hall is the Sala Grande.
Take a vaporetto to Lido Santa Maria Elisabetta. The festival venues are about 10 to 15 minutes from the stop.
III · Tickets · open to the public
€50 in the Sala Grande
Anyone can buy tickets. In 2026 single tickets went on sale online on 11 August. An evening seat in the Sala Grande cost €50 (€40 reduced); the 15:00 show cost €18, the 17:00 €25, and Sala Volpi at 17:00 €10. Under-26s, over-65s and Biennale Card holders paid reduced prices.
Prices for 2027 have not been published. A ticket does not guarantee a walk on the red carpet.

Leone d'Oro
The Golden Lion is the festival's top award. In 2026 it went to Woman Unknown, directed by May el-Toukhy; Maggie Gyllenhaal was president of the jury. The 2027 jury and line-up have not been announced — in 2026 the line-up was announced on 23 July.
