Henley Royal Regatta
29 June – 4 July 2027 · Tuesday to Sunday
The course · 2,112 m · upstream
One mile, 550 yards
Every race is rowed upstream from Temple Island towards Henley Bridge over 1 mile 550 yards, or 2,112 metres, a little longer than the standard 2,000. There are no lanes of six or eight: two crews race side by side between wooden booms, and the loser goes home.
Since 1839 · eights
The Grand
The regatta was first held in 1839. Prince Albert became its patron in 1851, and it has been Henley Royal Regatta since. The Grand Challenge Cup for men's eights has been raced since the very first regatta. The Diamond Challenge Sculls followed in 1844.
Reading the water · from above
Two whirlpools a stroke
When an oar blade leaves the water it leaves a pair of small whirlpools behind, the puddles. Eight oars leave a lattice of them, and a crew can read its own rhythm in how evenly they are spaced.
Finals day 2026 · Sunday 5 July
