Cut into the rock
Three tiers of 96 arcades were hewn into a disused quarry under Prince-Archbishop Johann Ernst Thun, to plans by Fischer von Erlach, for equestrian displays and animal baiting.
Max Reinhardt first staged a festival play here in 1926; a roll-back roof followed in the late 1960s.
Domplatz
Jedermann!
The founding play is given in the open air before the cathedral of 1614–1628, its twin towers of white marble; 2,544 seats. The cries of “Jedermann” come from the cathedral roof, the Franciscan steeple, old-town towers and the hills. In bad weather it moves into the Großes Festspielhaus.
Since 1920
Three founders
- Hugo von Hofmannsthal
- Max Reinhardt
- Richard Strauss
The first Jedermann before the cathedral, in August 1920, is counted as the festival's birth. Philipp Hochmair is reported to return in the title role in 2027.
