The spring exhibition sets the theme. The show announced for 2027 was cancelled on 31 August 2026; the Met will announce a new one, and with it the gala.

Eleanor Lambert started the benefit to fund the Costume Institute; the first ticket was reportedly $50. It is still the Institute’s main source of funding.

The current exhibition, Costume Art, is open to anyone with a museum ticket until 10 January 2027, in the Condé M. Nast Galleries beside the Great Hall.
